Since I got the macbook, I’ve been playing with the isight camera and taking a daily self portrait. I’m not sure how long I can keep it up, but when I am compressing videos, I snap a pic. Check them out in my Flickr photos.

Ken Murphy is a musician, tinkerer, and jack of all trades. Blaed Spence interviewed him at the Maker Faire. He mentored a robotics club at a school and became obsessed with robotics. In the quest for simplicity, Ken came up with blinky bugs which he makes and sells for fun.

After editing this video, I was inpired to try making one from parts around the house. It didn’t turn out nearly as pretty or well made as as his are, but it was fun to make! If Ken’s is a blinky bug, mine is a blinky cockroach!

At the Maker Faire, Michael Sturtz, brought in his “Fire” truck complete with all sorts of resources to make things out of fire. The Crucible is a special place and community centered around the fire arts.

Skylar Fell is one of the teachers at The Crucible and shows us how she uses a mig welder.

Tara Murray showed the crowds at Maker Faire how to do lampworking. She’s wearing kevlar wrist warmers. One of the things that I noticed is that they had set up red gels and welding goggle “peep shows” so that the crowds could watch without burning their retinas.
I was very impressed by the teachers at The Crucible. Their passion for their work burns bright!
If you’re into fire and in the San Francisco area, The Crucible is putting on a fire festival on July 11-16, that looks like a blast!

I’ve been exploring second life and the possibilities of video podcasting from a collaborative reality. If you want to find me in Second Life, just do a search for “Bre Petty” which is my SL name. Here I am with the ingame version of Make Magazine. I’m pretty happy with my doppleganger you see here.
I’ve got a lot to learn to get the camera techniques all set and learn about how to make it work. Here’s a link to the Second Life machinima page. Of course, if you’re a machinima fan, you already know about Silver Bells and Golden Spurs.
So who do I run into in Second Life? Spin Martin! He asks me who got me into SL and I list a bunch of my friends including Eric Rice… Spin Martin, then replies that he is Eric Rice!!! Small Second Life World!
Tikva Morowati is an ITP (Interactive Telecommunications Program) graduate student at NYU and she’s sent us a video report on her final project, The Snackfax!

Besides being a CNC machine for icing on cakes, they have networked it so that you will be able to control the icing machine remotely.

Tikva’s going to be making some more videos to spotlight the innovative projects that her classmates have been working on, I can’t wait to see more work out of this program!

If you hack things, you surely know about the O’Reilly hack books, but if you are new to the hacking world, they are a great place to start learning about how to make technology your own.

While at the Maker Faire, I spent some time with Brian Jepson, editor with O’Reilly Media, browsing the O’Reilly hacks booth. What books have you encountered that have inspired you to make or hack things?

John Maushammer likes to hack small things. He’s hacked the cvs disposable camera and put it into a model rocket!

I made this video for Make Magazine. Click to watch the video (MP4).

Bathsheba Grossman is exploring new territory where art, math, science, and the rapid prototype industry colide.

Bathsheba makes these objects out of metal and they really look like they couldn’t be made out of metal! I’m really glad she came to the maker faire and shared her passion and knowledge about 3D printing and sculpting with technology.

Made for the Makezine Blog. Click here to watch the video (MP4)
