I’m off to go to Gnomedex tonight. Here I am last year with Steve Garfield. Becoming friends with him was one of the highlights of last years conference.

Catching Up

I’ve been busy this week finishing up video for Make:.  I could post about the last three videos I made about steambots, snakebots, and musicbots, but you should just go read my posts and watch my videos over at Make: for now!  A wrapup of them all is on Rocketboom today which you could go check out.  While you’re at it, go listen to Jay Fienberg’s podcast interview with me about the intro music to the Make: podcast. The music Jay makes is great and you get to hear a bunch of that in the podcast too!

Last Day As A Public School Teacher

Today was my last day as a public school teacher in Seattle Public Schools. I’ve taught Art, English, Social Studies, Math, Music, Drama, and Dance.

One of my writing students wrote me a letter and gave it to me today.

Mr. Pettis,

Even though most of the time I thought that some of the stuff you taught was useless, in the end it really helped me in life. Usually when someone got me a new journal or diary for my birthday I would writte in it once in like 5 years and thanks to the journal prompts I have learned to start doing that.

Your class has really shown me how creative I could be and to take the media into my own hands.

Thanks for everything. H.A.G.S. (Have A Great Summer)

PS. Power To The Bloggers

Ron Timmons has been my supervisor this year and his experience with young writers has been invaluable. Before he knew I was leaving, he wrote me this evaluation:

  • Mr. Pettis has created an environment where students are comfortable sharing their ideas and work, as well as discussing literature.
  • Students are able to show their multiple intelligences through a wide variety of projects and assessment formats.
  • Mr. Pettis uses technology as a way to engage students and allow them to shine in ways that they may not ordinarily be able to shine.
  • In his Unified Arts classes, Mr. Pettis designed projects that were well sequenced and scaffolded. Additionally, the projects were fun and the curriculum rigorous. Students really enjoy the class and are proud of their creations.
  • He sets high standards and holds students accountable. He models the work that students are expected to do and often shares his own creations with the classes.
  • Mr. Pettis is open to feedback and uses input to improve instruction and curriculum design.

And so it with these good sendoffs that I leave this job behind. I haven’t given up teaching, I’m taking it to a bigger audience on the internet.

One Minute News from Vloggercon (Bre Pettis)

Watch the video
Here the one, the only, the formidable and fashionable Bre Pettis from We Are The Media (http://wearethemedia.com/) describes Vloggercon as “vlog heaven,” which really quite accurate. He was a blast to interview, as you can see at the end of this clip. Can’t wait to hang out again soon, Bre!

Yesterday it became public knowledge that this is my last year teaching in the traditional classroom environment. Life is full of changes. Change is good.
