Multi-Panel Video

This just blew my mind. - Link

Ok, now I’m officially looking forward to final cut!

iMovie Export Problems

I use iMovie and an Sony HC1 to make my videos. I love iMovie for it’s easy strait-to-the-hard-drive recording, easily archived folders, and quick workflow. Usually I export a full resolution video from iMovie which takes care of the de-interlacing and then I compress from that full rez file.

But this last week iMovie changed and instead of outputting 1920×1080 videos, it changed it to it’s native 1440×1080 and the deinterlacing thing and despite fussing around with plists, it’s screwed up. It might have gone all wrong when I refreshed the pram recently, but that doesn’t make sense.

Anyhow, I’ve found a workaround, but the de-interlacing is killing me. This may just get me to move to final cut pro! - Link

Update: The expert settings option works except for the sound settings. I’m experimenting with other codecs since the Linear PCM adds a slight weird echo,.

Make a Tabletop Biosphere - Make: Video Podcast

This weekend, watch the video, download the pdf and create a closed system to live on your windowsill! If you have an aquarium, you probably have all the chemicals you need for this. If you have to buy new chemicals, you’ll have enough for hundreds of biospheres!

Apple Sleep Problem

Talking to 1800 APL CARE

I called 1-800-APL-CARE today to fix the sleep problem with my macbook pro. Mike helped me out! (Case # 81227494)

I was putting it to sleep and it wouldn’t sleep. It would get really hot and then when I woke it up, I’d often have to turn the computer off and on again to get it out of sleep mode. NO FUN!

Here’s what he said to do in case you have the same problem.

1. Shut your computer down.
2. Take out the battery.
3. With the battery out, push the power button for ten seconds.
4. Put the battery back in and power up.
5. Power down.
6. Push the power button and then immediately hold down the option, apple, P and R keys until it makes the apple gong sound for the second time, then let go.
7. My sleep problem was fixed!

He also made me an appointment at the apple store to get my airport checked out since it’s busted and I think my ram is fried since I’ve been having problems importing live HD video into imovie. I’ll get all my hardware tested out later today!

Children’s Book About Making Things!

istock_000003199606xsmall.jpg

For two summers in 1979 and 1983, I went to go visit my Aunt Merideth and Uncle Joe. The first summer I spent waking up every morning at 5 in the morning and going out with Joe in his beat up pickup truck. He knew all the trash routes in Boston and we would get to them before the trash men would and get all the good broken stuff. He would fix everything up and take it to a flea market for the weekend and sell it off. That first summer we made some stuff together, a simple soap box (similar to the one in the stock image above) and a bike made from parts of lots of bikes. Joe did all the work, but he took the time to then have me do it over again so that I could learn how everything fit together. Then we painted it. He asked me what color would I like it? I said black.

It was a powerful time for me, I think that I was just there for a week, but I learned that complicated things came apart, could be fixed, put back together, and be sold.

The following year I returned, and things had changed. They had moved to the coast of Massachusets and were managing an apartment building. Most mornings, Joe and I would go pick up donuts and then go out to my Grandpa Wendell’s farm. Joe had set up a temporary workshop in the back and we spent our days fixing up a motorboat. Joe had bought it for $50 and it needed help. He was replacing big chunks of the hull with plywood and using fiberglass to seal it up. I left before seeing that thing work, but the lessons of being able to aquire broken things cheap and fix them up, were impressed upon me again.

I’m starting work on a book that will be projects for kids… you know, projects that kids can actually do and I’m thinking back to the early days of making stuff.

I feel confident that there will be sections about fixing up bikes and making a go cart and I’m looking forward to exploring other possibilities for young people to be able to get the bug to make things. Crafts and simple and challenging projects are all open game.

I want young people to feel that same empowerment I felt when I worked on projects.

What kinds of projects do you remember messing around with when you were a kid? I’d love to hear what you think should be in a children’s book about making things.

Weekend Project Birthday - Make a Jam Jar Jet! - Make: Video Podcast

mp4 | mov | hd-appletv| 3gp |3g2 | itunes | blip | youtube | pdf

This year of making videos has been awesome! Making something and then making a video about how to make it every week has been an incessant and intense year! Let’s celebrate by making a jam jar jet!

This pulse jet works by igniting a flame, which pushes the gas out of the jar and then bit of a vacuum that it leaves sucks the air back in and the circle is repeated. Watch the video and download the pdf to learn how to make it!

I haven’t done this alone, the guests on the show have brought their expertise to it. Thanks to everyone who’s been a part of this show! Also, thanks to you for watching and commenting!

Weekend Projects is sponsored by Microchip Technology. Check out their seminars and the Microchip Masters Conference.
