I use iMovie and an Sony HC1 to make my videos. I love iMovie for it’s easy strait-to-the-hard-drive recording, easily archived folders, and quick workflow. Usually I export a full resolution video from iMovie which takes care of the de-interlacing and then I compress from that full rez file.
But this last week iMovie changed and instead of outputting 1920×1080 videos, it changed it to it’s native 1440×1080 and the deinterlacing thing and despite fussing around with plists, it’s screwed up. It might have gone all wrong when I refreshed the pram recently, but that doesn’t make sense.
Anyhow, I’ve found a workaround, but the de-interlacing is killing me. This may just get me to move to final cut pro! - Link
Update: The expert settings option works except for the sound settings. I’m experimenting with other codecs since the Linear PCM adds a slight weird echo,.

you may know this by the time you read this comment, but apple just introduced the NEW iLife 08 today. With an “all new” imovie. $79 update (again)… maybe you could try the free demo before dropping all that $$$ on final cut pro. I’ve used FCP once before and although it worked great, it has a steep learning curve - it is a powerful program.
